Holwell History

Holwell - Spring in the hollow

Holwell, originally aptly named ‘Holy Well’ due to it’s natural water sources, has a rich history dating back to the 13th century, mentioned in records from 1244. The property features a restored water wheel and mill pond and farmhouse with traditional stone buildings converted into living spaces. Set in a gentle rolling valley, it offers beautiful countryside views. The 18-foot waterwheel is said to be one of only three in the country and has been carefully restored and still functions today. Original features from different time periods can be seen throughout the property.

Ken Sprague and Psychodrama

Perhaps Holwells most memorable occupant and guardian was the late Ken Sprague (1927-2004), a radical artist and voice for socialism, who in the 70’s converted Holwell from the farm it was, into an artistic centre with his then wife Sheila, a talented potter who sadly passed away in 1973 due to health issues. Ken went on to set up the Holwell International Centre For Psychodrama and Sociodrama with his second wife Marcia, an American psychotherapist, and the centre became the original home of psychodrama in this country. The centre thrived for more than 25 years, and was where Marcia and Ken trained many of the first generation of UK psychodramatists and trainers.

Many of the features you see at Holwell are from Kens time here, the stone circle was placed on the land for a wedding they held on site, there are sculptures dotted around, old water features, wood carvings in the house, and the sauna garden is situated in the little zen garden where Ken used to cultivate bonsai trees.

Springboard Consultancy

Liz and Jenny, founders of the multi-award-winning Springboard Consultancy then took on Holwell as one of their amazing training centres. The Springboard Consultancy offers women’s and men’s development programmes along with other transformational courses for companies and individuals.

Liz and Jenny took on the task of modernising and renovating much of the property including the project to architecturally renovate what is now the wellness centre from the derelict cottage it was, to the beautiful eco barn it is today. The pair poured a lot of love and care into Holwell that can still be felt today.

Holwell Holistic Retreat

We took on the retreat as a family venture back in 2016. Our Yoga studio has at times hosted popular weekly yoga class programs for the local community, and today we operate throughout the year as a retreat-specific venue for facilitators and group leaders to hire as their retreat space. We are also available for bed & breakfast stays and as a venue for trainings and workshops.
